RWE npower acquires Welsh tech firm RUMM
Cloud-based technology to contribute to British business opportunity to save up to £4 billion per year on energy
1st April, 2015 — RWE npower today announced the acquisition of specialist energy Management Company RUMM in a move that could help British business save up to £4 billion on their annual energy bills. The Welsh tech firm, which was spun out of the University of South Wales, uses the latest innovations in cloud-based data analytics to help businesses monitor and control their energy in real time.
Since its inception in 2005, RUMM Energy Management Services has already saved over £43 million for its customers. npower Business Solutions, which is the second largest supplier of energy to British businesses, will roll out RUMM’s software to its biggest customers in Q2 2015, with the goal of delivering energy efficiency at scale.
With the UK’s industrial and commercial sectors spending £20 billion a year on electricity and gas, npower Business Solutions has shown that increasing energy efficiency by 20% could represent a collective saving of around £4 billion annually to British business.
Paul Massara, CEO of RWE npower, said: “npower Business Solutions is committed to helping the UK’s largest companies manage their energy needs so they can budget for the future. RUMM’s technology is truly innovative, giving businesses the tools they need to make significant savings on the bottom line.
“This deal represents an important investment in both our energy solutions business and the thriving South Wales tech community. With the right support and incentives, we are confident that Welsh start-ups, like RUMM, will continue to grow, exporting their expertise across the world.”
Dr Stephen Lloyd, Chairman and co-founder of RUMM, said: “Being part of RWE npower represents a huge opportunity for RUMM. npower Business Solutions wants to provide the best possible energy management for its customers and RUMM has the capability to help deliver this. We spoke to a number of energy suppliers, but the way the team at npower want to bring innovation to their customers proved decisive.”
Jamie Watkins, Co-founder and Director of Sales at RUMM, added: “This is a proud day for everyone at RUMM. We’ve continued to invest in the development of our “best in class” software, while waving the flag for Welsh entrepreneurship. We are excited at the prospect of working with npower Business Solutions to help some of the UK’s biggest companies cut energy, cost and carbon.”
Developed as the result of work at the University of South Wales RUMM’s proprietary software, IBASS, captures and stores energy usage data every half-hour to identify potential inefficiencies on customers’ sites. The software provides the basis to enable significant energy reduction and has the capability to offer switch-off measures. RUMM’S software is integral to its behavioural approach to energy management which is a unique aspect of its offering.
RUMM saving energy and money
RUMM are delighted to announce that Co-founder, director and company secretary of RUMM Energy Management Services, Steve Thomas has been appointed Professor of Innovation and Engagement at the University of South Wales.

Steve has been recognised for his outstanding contribution in innovation and engagement activities and applied research. A significant element of Steve’s application was based on his spin-out activity with Steve Lloyd (Chairman), particularly the applied research and energy management work at RUMM.

Grand Designs Live London are pleased to have DBLO Associates exhibiting this year
Creative living at its best!
This small terraced cottage in South West London is a gem of a project - humble and modest at a glance, with the potential to sparkle. Commissioned by a visitor to last year's Grand Designs Live, the Architects responsible for making 'the worst house on the street' shine, were Grand Designs Live London based exhibitors DBLO Associates architects Fulham.
Folding glass doors replaced the exterior kitchen wall, small window and door – allowing light and life to seamlessly flow through the house from outside in and vice versa and creating a flush floor threshold with the same floor finish inside and outside. The highly insulated extension with cedum green roof incorporates western red cedar timber cladding, which frames the glass opening - maintaining the nostalgia and personality of the cottage, whilst adding new contemporary and eco credentials to the property. Given a limited budget and the fact that it had to include a first floor extension, two bathrooms and full redecoration, the design team sought to use readily available, affordable materials and products including tiles, flooring and lighting. 'The kitchen came from IKEA and the tiles from Topps Tiles'- Claire Hale (Partner) - which kept cost low whilst cleverly detailed style remained high and resulted in this flexible and bespoke living space which will be enjoyed year round during family time and for entertaining.
DBLO architects Clapham worked closely with the client to make their Grand Design a reality - proving that budget doesn't have to be an obstacle, that with good interpretation of your clients brief, an innovative approach and imagination - you can achieve a grand solution that suits you. The total cost for this project excluding VAT came in at £145,000.
DBLO Associates Architects will be exhibiting at the show in May. Find them in Grand Build stand B21
Enhance value through design
Architecture is one of humanity's most visible and long-lasting forms of expression. Most historic civilizations are identified by their surviving architectural relics, like the Pyramids of Gyza, the Golden Pavilion in Japan, or the Taj Mahal. The history of the discipline spans as long as humanity - from Classical to Rocco to Art Nouveau.
No wonder there is much emphasis on choosing architects, the best in the business as they have the very power to change the world. What sets dblo Associates apart from the rest? These are a powerful team of individuals passionate about creating and enhancing value through design. The combined knowledge and passion these individuals have makes them a valuable asset to any project they are working on.
dblo associates architects Knightsbridge work covers architecture, interior design and development. Working as a studio, allows dblo architects Chelsea flexibility to expand and contract to suit workloads and to draw on the wider expertise of our associate studios across London.
